Compression Tables

File formats for compressed archives, ASCII text and Binaries

[This page is someone elses work, but I cannot remember where I got it from]

Files received from the Internet (as e-mail attachments or downloads) are usually in a form which requires decoding or decompressing by different software applications (depending upon the platform). To aid users in dealing with such files we have provided the links to the most popular archiving/coding programs used on each of the most widely-used operating systems (Macintosh, PC/DOS, Unix, VAX/VMS).

A "?" in the Table indicates that, as we are unfamiliar with the product, we are unable to provide indications as to where to find it.
To download each of the applications, one need only click on its underlined name in the following list:

Warning:

The network transmission of graphics and multimedia documents are currently carried out through protocols developed ad hoc for the specific file format.

NOTE:

(0) This program has a ".bin" extension and is thus a MacBinary file. Downloading such files avoids the need for any sort of decoding or decompressing software - as is the file will decompress automatically upon either downloading or clicking on its icon. Decompression will produce all the files necessary for a working copy of Stuffit Expander.
(*) This is sometimes also called "GNU Compress" and manages file with the .z extension (version 1.1.1 or better).
(1) These are system commands already incorporated into the UNIX system.
(2) This software is also available for the following platforms:
(3) When using tar.exe on the PC platfrom, the order in which the options are entered are very important.
